What is Knowledge Management and why is it important?

Churches and other Christian organisations ought not lag behind in a rapidly changing technological world, not due to lack of knowledge, but due to poor knowledge management. Other secular organizations and corporates are already on the first lane of adopting and advancing their knowledge management strategies and capacity to enhance their organizational performance. Caution ought to be taken that we, the body of Christ do not realise this when it is too late, when our lapses are irredeemable.

But first, what exactly is knowledge management and why is it important?

Knowledge management in simple terms is about getting the right intelligence, to the right people, at the right time, to make the right decisions. It also has to do with how such intelligence is stored and disseminated. To understand the importance of knowledge management in your church or organisation, think about an organism that is presented with various options or choices every day to ensure its survival.

In order to survive, the organism needs to understand its environment and have the right knowledge to make choices that will ensure adaptation and survival. It would have to rely on past experiences and memory to make appropriate decisions every day. But that’s not all. It should be able to anticipate the changes in the environment and make appropriate decisions to withstand or adapt to the changes.

Without proper management of their knowledge or without being innovative, churches and Christian organizations may lose that crucial knowledge through retirement and staff turnover. They are likely to repeat mistakes and fail to replicate successes, fail to collaborate internally and fail to transfer operational knowledge to new staff members quickly and effectively.

FOCUS ON THE STANDARDS: TALENT MANAGEMENT

The concepts of ‘talent’ and ‘talent management’ have been deliberated throughout the history of mankind. Consistent with the spiritual perspective, talent is defined as the ability to use natural aptitude and experience to perform certain tasks. These talents are God-given abilities for every individual to contribute to kingdom work in a special way. That is why AfCAA’s third standard – Talent Management – focuses on the need for the Church and Christian institutions to manage the talents bestowed upon their personnel to enable them to fulfil their life’s purpose and at the same time contribute to ministry or business success.

Talent management plays an important role in your ministry, organizational or business strategy. It should take in to account the person, incorporating all dimensions of the professional, intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual.

Daniel 1:3-20 gives an account as to how top talent is specifically sourced. The king ordered his chief of staff Ashpenaz to recruit young men without any physical defect, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. They were to be trained in Babylonian language and literature for three years before entering the king’s service.

God gave four among the young men – Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah – knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. After the training period, the four exhibited outstanding abilities in all areas of their training.

The above account indicates that the emphasis on the value attached to skilled workers dates to ancient times. The importance of skilled workers as key in executing given assignments cannot be over-emphasized. We can deduce that it takes a skilled worker in a relationship with the employer to be recognized for greater assignments, to accelerate and progress and subsequently take higher responsibilities.

The AfCAA Standard encourages the church and Christian organizations and businesses to lay down policies and structures to guide their workforce planning, talent acquisition and leadership training, development and succession planning. They are also to create an environment that promotes a learning culture and gives employees a clear indication of their career path as a form of motivation.

ALARM-Kenya receives AfCAA accreditation

African Leadership And Reconciliation Ministries (ALARM) Kenya is now an AfCAA accredited organization.

ALARM Kenya received its accreditation and Charter Member certificates after successfully undergoing through  the AfCAA assessment exercise which is based on the seven Biblical Standards of accountability. 

ALARM is a Christian organization that exists to empower African men and womento be agents of reconciliation in their communities through training in biblical principles of servant leadership, peacebuilding, forgiveness and reconciliation.

Speaking during the accreditation ceremony in Nairobi, the Country Director for ALARM Kenya Ms. Racheal Mutai said the accreditation lays the foundation for an ongoing journey of intentionality towards realising full potential.

‘’ By submitting ourselves to the assessment process, we have demonstrated ourcommitment to walking the journey of accountability with AfCAA’’, she said.

The AfCAA seal of approval is a stamp of confidence that the organization’s operations comply with the internationally recognized AfCAA’s Biblical Standards of accountability, transparency and integrity.  This also means that Life Ministry – Kenya is now a Charter member of AfCAA. 

Besides lending credibility to an institution’s sound and transparent leadership and governance structures and processes, the AfCAA accreditation process is a value- adding exercise that helps in institutional strengthening. It also opens organizations to peer accountability and exposes them to social investors.

AfCAA hosts Talent Management training

Employers have a crucial role to play in nurturing and developing such gifts to empower employees to make meaningful contributions through their work. Churches and other Christian organizations and businesses have even a greater mandate in multiplying the talents within their ranks to more effectively serve God’s kingdom”, Sharon Kisire, a Christian human resources expert in Nairobi told participants during a Talent Management workshop recently.

She noted that there is no better way to carry out this stewardship role than to develop and nurture the talents of their employees.
